The Coronado Islanders boys’ lacrosse program seems to have been saving its best ball of the year for just the right time. After pulling off back-to-back wins against La Jolla High and Patrick Henry, the Islanders again took care of business this past week. Thumping St. Augustine High School at home by the final score of 14-4.

The first six minutes of Wednesday’s home game were relatively uneventful for the typically explosive Islanders’ attack. In fact, with 6:55 to play in the first, Coronado would find themselves in an early 1-0 lead after the game’s opening goal from the Saints.

However, St. Augustine seemed to flip the switch for the Islanders. Coronado would quickly tie things up with a goal from short range courtesy of Jared Capin. On the ensuing face-off, Robby Spane would win the draw, make a beeline for the goal, and connect on a mid-range wrister, making it a 2-1 Coronado lead.

The fireworks weren’t quite finished, though. After scoring only a second prior, Spane would win possession on the draw once again. After a few passes inside, Coronado would tally another goal as Mikey Bannon finished from short range.

For those keeping track at home, that would be three goals in the possession for the Islanders. All three of the goals came in just a 40-second window and completely flipped the game on a dime. Coronado would add one more goal before the end of the first quarter, thanks to an excellent steal and an eventual ground ball, scooped up by Jonah York.

York would quickly turn defense into offense, bringing the ball up the field to flip possession, eventually leading to a goal from Braydon Avallone, making it a 4-1 Islanders lead at the end of one quarter of action.

Heading to the second quarter, Coronado would soon expand upon their lead. Capin would strike for his second goal only 30 seconds into the second quarter with a nifty behind-the-back finish from short range, sending the Islander fans in attendance into a frenzy.

Capin’s second goal of the night would be quickly followed by Spane netting his second with a bullet into the top right corner of the net, making it a 6-1 game. Then, two goals by Jack Perry stretched the lead to 8-1.

With the Islanders’ explosive offensive second quarter, the effort from their defense would be equally impressive. Most notably in the second quarter, the Islanders’ defense outworked and out-hustled Saints attackers.

No one better embodied that “I want it more than you” attitude on the Islanders’ defense than Deklan Shann. Shann would make a remarkable play on the ball after an errant pass by St. Augustine with 5:40 to play in the half. Despite being five yards behind the nearest Saints attacker to the ball, Shann would turn on the jets, close the gap, and come away with the one-armed ground ball to flip possession back to Coronado.

Finally, to put an exclamation point on the first half of action, Capin netted the third of his eventual game-high five goals with a short-range bullet into the top left corner, making it a 9-1 lead at the end of the first half.

With the game under wraps by the end of the first half, Coronado would be in cruise control for much of the second half. Still, there were fun moments, such as a fourth-quarter goal from Jackson Preston and a quality around-the-back finish from Robby Spane to cap his hat trick.

Following the Wednesday win over the Saints, Coronado would grab yet another win, crushing Scripps Ranch 16-0 on the team’s senior night. Prior to the game, the team honored its senior core of Grant Kurtz, Jared Capin, Mikey Bannon, Jackson Ritterbeck, Landon Sutherland, Jonah York, and Robby Spane for their contributions to the program.

With the 2025 regular season not officially in the books, the Islanders now focus on the postseason. The CIF brackets were announced this past Friday, May 2nd, and Coronado earned the No.5 seed in the CIF Open Division bracket.

As a result, they are now slated for a first-round matchup against Santa Fe Christian on Thursday, May 8th, with a start time at 6 p.m.
