Coming off an impressive victory at the 2025 San Diego Classic Invitational, the Coronado Islanders girls’ volleyball team kept the good times rolling this past week. They grabbed a win over rival Point Loma High School in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24, 25-19. This pushed their record to 7-1 and extended their match-winning streak to, at the time, five games.
“They definitely have surprised me this season,” said Coach Adeile Ahum. “More than half the team is new to the roster, so I was skeptical of how well they were going to mesh right away. It has been very refreshing, but I know they have more to give this season.”
Leading the way on the attack for the Islanders against Point Loma would be sophomore Ashlynn Proctor. The second year varsity letterman logged a team high 11 kills, a solid 36.7% kill rate, while also tallying a team and game high four aces on serve.
“Ashlynn plays an important role offensively,” said Ahum. “Her skills offensively will definitely be a large part of the team’s success, but not solely. She will have some assistance with a few impactful players at the net this season. So far this early in the season, Ashlynn has had a huge impact offensively, and the team is definitely following suit. I have enjoyed her becoming more confident on the court as a leader and becoming more vocal.”
Coronado would get a pair of impact performances defensively from Emily Albin and Madison Davis. After leading the Islanders in blocks last season, Davis has taken her game to another level this season.
“Maddy has put in some off-season work,” said Ahum. “She has become stronger, faster, and more agile at the net. She definitely is more aggressive and is playing with so much poise this early in the season. She had a great showing against Point Loma and is playing with so much confidence. I expect that she will only go up from here and will have a huge impact defensively at the net.”
Also providing a spark for the Islanders in their win against Point Loma would be freshman Brooke Proctor. The Islanders’ setter would tally 17 assists in the victory, as well as 11 kills.
“I have been very impressed by her maturity and the natural talent she displays on the court,” said Ahum. “Her genuine and energetic support she gives each teammate when they are entering the court, scores a point for the team, or has an awesome play is very nice to see. As a new member of this squad, she is playing more like a veteran and is taking the lead by running her court when she is setting. She has displayed really early on that she is here to compete, and she will help her team do the same.”
Lydia Schutt would also leave her mark on the game with her ball-handling skills, finishing with 11 total assists on the afternoon.
Following the dominant win against Point Loma, Coronado would return home on Friday and grab another win over Santana; once again in straight sets, 25-6, 25-17, 25-21. The win brought the record to 8-1 and extended their winning streak to six games.
The Lady Islanders will be looking to keep rolling this week as they return to action with two matches. The first on August 26th against Otay Ranch and the second on August 27th against Montgomery.
